Won't lather to save your life. Nov 04, 2011

I have Pre de Provence after shave balm and love it. Very good stuff (hydrating, great non greasy easily absorbed cooling moisturizer)and the smell is also outstanding. I thought the same would apply to the shaving cream. Big mistake. I have over a dozen shaving creams and soaps and while there are differences and I have favorites etc. this one can't compete with any of them on any level. It does nothing I expect from a shaving cream/soap, starting with the fact that it won't lather. I have tried 2 different badger brushes (one pure and one silvertip badger). It provides no moisturizing, no lubrication and won't help the razor glide. I use a DE razor. Even my cheaper shaving creams and soaps outperform Pre de Provence on every level. What a disappointment. Don't they test this before they sell it? Do yourself a favor and save your money for something else. In that price range there are many choices. For example; Musgo Real in a tube will cost you only $10.00 and lathers like crazy.
Lather? Got plenty of it on the first try... Oct 29, 2011
By Bubblehead For Pre De Provence, you need to use at least an almond-sized glob. Do not use a sopping wet brush. And my water is harder than diamond. At any rate, this stuff is pretty good. Great on lubrication.
The thing is, since not all creams and soaps are created equal, it takes varying amounts of soap/water/lathering effort/brush soaking/etc to get the optimal performance from any product. Pre De Provence is no exception. The inability for some guys to get a feel for this variability and thus make on-the-fly adjustments, are translating into poor reviews of what's otherwise a good product. Shame. You don't need mountains and more mountains of whipped cream, you just need a layer that's physically thinner yet thicker in density. We're not trying to make big, fluffy Santa Claus beards here. That does not help with shaving.
Is this a repackaged L'Occitane? I've never used anything by that brand, but the metal tube and cap look identical to Pre De Provence. I absolutely love the scent, too. I think it's sage.
Retire your brush and shave mug Jan 24, 2011

When Pre de Provence stopped offering their shave soap in a disk that would fit in standard shaving soap mugs, I bought as much as I could find. I only used this more expensive cream when traveling. I still have a supply of their great shave soap, but I often enjoy this cream when I don't want to mess with a brush. I have tried lots of other premium shave creams, but this is my favorite. I use four small dabs of about an 1/8" each for each side of my face and neck. This cream is a lot thicker than others; so you can simply use your fingers to spread a small amount evenly on your dampened skin. Their After Shave Balm is also a treat. Note: This metal tube is no longer easy to travel with. You will need to squeeze some into a small TSA approved container.

Poor performance and awful scent Apr 09, 2011
By Square Shiny I've tried all sorts of traditional shaving creams and soaps with both boar and badger brushes, and this is perhaps some of the worst I've tried. Regardless of whether I used a little bit of water, a moderate amount, or a lot, I could never get a thick, protective lather - or much of a lather at all really. I found the blade to skip badly as this cream did not make for a smooth glide. I also did not feel protected from the blade at all. To top it off, this cream smells like your hands after pumping a tank full of gasoline! Not my idea of a good shaving experience, let me put it that way.
Their shaving soap, on the other hand, is really terrific if you take your time to build up the lather properly (40 seconds minimum). Though the scent of the soap and the cream are supposed to be the same, I can not disagree more. The soap is clean, herbaceous, light and pleasant, and the shave is smooth and comfortable.
If you really want a premium cream, try anything by Taylor of Old Bond Street, or Prorasso. Those are exceptional creams for the money!
